We visited the Bracken Bat Cave with our New Braunfels Roots & Shoots group.
To say it was amazing would be an understatement. It was beyond words.

Here are some great facts we learned:
- For more than 10,000 years, the Bracken Cave in Texas has been home to as many as 20 million Mexican Free-tailed bats every spring — the largest concentration of the creatures in the world.
- Mexican Free-tailed bats can fly up to 60 miles an hour with the help of tail winds.
- They go as high as 10,000 feet, up where planes fly.
- No other kind of bat in the world forms such large colonies.
- 20 million Mexican free-tailed bats in central Texas consumes nearly a half million pounds of insects each night
- They save farmers a million to million and a half dollars and save our environment from tons of pesticides being applied to crops.
- Just in case you need another reason to love bats, here's a great fact for you...they can eat 600 mosquitoes in just one hour!
